An Afternoon In Havana

The hearts of boys are wild and free, they throw caution to the wind with every chance encounter. Nothing is off-limits and everything an adventure. I have a deep longing to connect with moments that are spontaneous and unplanned. My invading the space of these youthful boys congregating along the Malecon at the harbour entrance to Havana was an extraordinary moment of pure joy and energy.

Every wolf pack have their centuries that lookout for possible danger. These boys were constantly watching for any approaching police or authority. In a communist country where ‘Big Brother’ watches over you where even the ice cream shops are nationalised, freedom is sought at every opportunity.

This collection recorded in only a few minutes speaks of the resilience of youth, a group of boys who one day will face many bigger challenges. If only for a moment one late Summers afternoon life was beautiful and free.
