ROBBEN ISLAND

In 2004 Nelson Mandela launched the Mandela Centre of Memory which today houses the archive of Nelson Mandela’s life. 3 Months prior to the launch of the archive library, Mr Mandela along with the Nelson Mandela Foundation chose 18 of my works from out my Robben Island Collection to celebrate the official opening. In 2001 armed with only a camera and rolls of 24 exposure black and white film, Willman began documenting Robben Island independently. After much harassment by The Robben Island Museum it was finally agreed upon that Willman could complete his documentary. 18 months later the collection was complete. It was this body of work that gained the attention of not only the Nelson Mandela Foundation but various other institutions around the world. The Robben Island Collection has exhibited around the world with many of the works forming part of permanent collections in International museums.
